Negotiated Learning Plan

Reflecting on work I have previously made, research and ongoing interest in Land art, landscape and layers will be the concept of this personal, self managed project.

Derived from my Stage 1 HAD118 essay, 'Landscape from Ruskin to Today', Land art, in many forms: sculpture, structure, place, material etc has been a particular interest to me. Sculptural work has been a passion in my Fine art practice, usually using a tactile material like clay or wire. The ability to be hands on with a constructive material, developing and manipulating has always been appealing to me. With this in mind, the ability to plan, learn and create a  land specific metal sculpture would be my ideal outcome for this personal project. However, my learning and testing out ideas of sculpture using different media will determine my possibilities. Therefore, as detailed below; keeping an open mind and continuing to expand my knowledge will be essential to the success of this project.

  • Further develop and expand ideas working with a variety of media and mediums to further broaden my Fine Art practice.

  • Test ideas combining my interests above to build a new body of work and to enable informed choices leading to my final Exhibition outcome.

  • Think about past modules, short projects and current modules that will aid with process and thinking.

  • Create models/mock ups of sculptural work using wire, clay etc to help envisage abstract form.

  • Test larger construction using paper mache, wood, mixed media.

  • Learn new skill - Welding. Book in with workshop technician.

  • Contact local welding companies for possibilities of visits/learning.

  • Consider installation work.

  • Revert to this NLP to review the progress of my work.

  • Forward plan, check timetable module.

  • Attend artist talks and make full use of individual tutorial support and advise.

  • Participate in group tutorials, crits and discussions.

  • Self organise any relevant work and seek advise where required, demonstrate resourcefulness.

  • Sketchbooks, library resources, Indictive reading list.

  • Blog

  • Exhibitions, cultural events, student engagement, HAD231, ART281.

  • Initial research/recommended artists; Anselm Kiefer, Joseph Beuys, Rauschenburg, Frank Stella, Thomas Sheibitz, Carl Andre, Anthony Caro, Robert Smithson, David Smith, Sculpture, combines, Land art, construction, line, sequence, form, structure, place, historical and contemporary relevance.

To realise my 'Live' site location an appropriate outdoor space will need to be considered. Taking into account audience, material, ethical and aesthetic considerations. I will evaluate this depending on the outcomes and points below.

  • Written proposal/permission to Sunderland Council.

  • Outdoor site placement without permission.

  • University of Sunderland outdoor plinth.

  • Mass/ Size/material/transportation.

  • Contrast between forms/colour.

  • Outcomes of investigation of sculpture and other media.
