Post 11...my work... Semester 2... Stop motion animation exploration...

Working towards a final outcome of work.

Stop motion...an animated filmmaking technique.

This is a GIF of Julienne Matthieu having her hair brushed in the film ’El hotel eléctrico’ from October 1908. It is an early example of the use of stop motion animation. Watching this video, I feel like I’m watching something truly special unfold, and appreciate it as such. Stop motion represents the purest expression of the creative spirit on screen.

Dismantling my original pipe sculpture, I wanted to re-use these individual objects (30 x 10cm steel pipes).

By physically manipulating in small increments between individual photographed frames, the objects appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames are played back.

Although the stop frame process deemed to be easy, it was quite labour intensive and time consuming. However, the outcome of each short video I have created, out way the intense production. I really am impressed with this craft. Dedication, patience and creativity is all that is required.

Music by Thomas Newman

(Third edit/attempt and final)

Creates the illusion of movement through space and time, a liking to VR. Using x2 mirrors gives this sculptural form the appearance of floatation. Also, adding my ‘Installation view’ canvas painting in the work and editing the end orientation of the video, gives a disorientated feeling to the space. I decided to add the background music to the video. My past group crit deemed favourable to adding this extra element in my previous work. The music here adds a strange but appealing quirkiness to the video. In addition, the change of colour filter adds interest and variation, both work well to enhance the viewer’s experience.

Overall, the video reflects on how we view the surrounding space in addition to the sculpture, and vice versa.

Below I have used the same stop motion technique...a short video using my son’s toys...lots of fun and my son loved the outcome!

Also below, a great VR app to explore. Allows creation of 3D models, manipulation of movement and colour then placing the object into a space.
