Last week I had a workshop with the technician, Graham Bowes. Although it was a quick introduction to welding, something I have never experienced before, it was informative enough to know the basics of this skill.

I was hands on using the different equipment during demonstrations, feeling confident and safe to do so.

I found spot welding to be a fast, convenient process. Metal can be welded together using this machine in a matter of seconds! On the other hand, Arc welding required patience and planning. Initial construction of the desired workpieces/area required stability via vices/gripper tools before the weld process began. The technique of using the welding torch was difficult to maintain. A constant separation between the electrode and the workpieces whilst moving the torch at a consistent speed will require practice.

To get the best from this new skill I will continue to practice in the workshop with the knowledge that Graham will be on hand if required. I am definitely under no impression that welding is an easy process!

Overall this has been a great, enjoyable start in exploring metal sculpture.
